One of the most important things to consider when prepping your home for a large-scale catastrophe is food. You may have already obtained spoil-proof foods that you and your family can subsist on for a year or more but those foods are not going to be worth anything if they are not properly stored. The first reason why food storage is so important in an emergency is the most obvious: you are going to want to store your food so that it doesn’t spoil. In order to achieve this goal you will need to designate a dry, room temperature area of your home with ample storage space which we will get into a bit later.
There is another reason why it is so crucial to keep your food properly stored. Imagine your city or town is cut off from all supplies for a month-long period. Food is starting to get scarce and your neighbors are starting to get desperate. Everyone needs to feed their families and after a certain point, they will do anything for food including stealing form their neighbors. It is just as important to store your food in a manner that is secure form thieves as it is to store it in a manner that is safe from spoilage. In order to achieve this goal you will have to get a little creative.

First let’s address keeping your food fresh and edible for as long as possible. To start with you are going to want to stock up on as many canned goods, dry grains, pastas, pinto beans, oats, pancake mix, hard candy and other non-perishable items as possible. One great way to store these and perishable items is in a Mylar bag. You will need a supply of Mylar bags, oxygen absorbers, and a hair straightener. Pour all of your materials into the Mylar bags and place one 300cc oxygen absorber per gallon of contents. Then use the hot hair straightener and run it along the opening of the bag. Remember to not fill the bag all the way up so you can leave some space for a nice hefty seal. Use the jar to store your oxygen absorbers and only break them out when you are ready to use them immediately. Using vacuum sealed bags is an easier way to store your food but it is not as thorough.
So now that you have all of your food properly sealed, where do you store it? The most important thing to remember here is to not store your food near an AC unit or a furnace or anything else that can give off heat or blow air onto your supplies. One congenial place to store your food (if you have one) is the closet space under a staircase. You can also build some elevated shelves in your garage to keep them secure.
As far as containers go you can pick up cheap plastic storage containers at your hardware or local department store. These make great containers for food and will keep it safe from insects. Keeping your food safe from other humans is something you will have to consider as well. If you have a bathtub that never gets used, you can store the containers there as people would not think to look in your bathroom for food. You can also create a trapdoor that gives way to a crawlspace in your home so you can discreetly stow your family’s precious food supply.
